Motorists Pleads Guilty to Hit and RUn

A motorist pleaded guilty last Friday to accidentally hitting and killing a female bicyclist near the Newport Coast.

The male driver admitted in Orange County Superior Court in Santa Ana to one felony count of injury hit and run and one misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence. He was sentenced to four years in prison and one year in county jail.

The victim was a Newport Beach doctor.  They were riding their bicycles down Newport Coast Drive when the motorist collided into the victim. After she was hit, she was taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. She later died from her injuries. The victim practiced medicine at Newport Family medicine. She served as the president of Greater Newport Physicians for 18 years. She is remembered as a great physician, leader in the medical community, business leader, and family leader.

The doctor was an avid bicyclist and enjoyed spending time outside. Her colleagues describe as a physician who put patients first. The doctor would often personally call patients to check on their wellbeing.  She was a pioneer for women in medicine. In fact, she was the first chairwoman of the department of family practice at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach. She was a mentor to other doctors.

The motorist was driving a black, full-sized pickup. He ran into the victim from behind, which sent her flying of her bicycle.  After he collided into the victim, he fled the scene. He was arrested three days later.

Unfortunately, bicycling accidents are often quite severe. Bicyclists have little protection, which makes these accidents often fatal. It is important for bicyclists and motorists to be careful on the road. Bicyclists should never assume that a motorist can see them. Motorists must check to see if there is a bicyclist in their blind spot. Intersections can often be dangerous. It is always safest to let the bicyclist pass. It can be difficult to determine the exact speed of a bicyclist.
