Warm Weather Driving

Spring and summer are fast approaching. We will be experiencing warmer weather that Orange County is famous for. This means more beach trips and sunny days. There will be less rain, fog, and dreary winter weather. Unfortunately, this means that the driving conditions will also change. You will probably have to change some of your driving habits. Each season has its own particular driving challenges. Warmer seasons can also be dangerous to drive in, but the dangers are often over looked. Here are some tips on how to drive safely in the warmer seasons.

Proper maintenance

Proper car maintenance is important for safety in every season. The weather change will also affect your car.  Every vehicle has its own proper maintenance schedule. Check your car’s owner manual for more information about your car’s maintenance. You should also regularly check your engine’s oil, transmission fluid, and fluid. These fluids help your engine run smoothly. The increase in temperature can affect fluid levels. In warmer weather, tire pressure tends to increase. Proper maintenance will make the car not only last longer but also much safer. It is worth investing the time and money into maintaining your car. Properly maintain your car in the warmer months, and you’ll be able to safely ride throughout the warmer months.

Tire Pressure

This is probably one of the most forgotten parts of proper car maintenance. Temperature changes can affect the tire pressure. In warmer months, the tire pressure usually increases.  You want to make sure your tires are properly inflated. Proper inflation affects handling, performance, and fuel economy. Under and over inflated tires will make your vehicle more difficult to handle. Your vehicle will also have to work harder to accelerate or turn. This can significantly harm the fuel economy. Your owner’s manual will have the correct tire pressure level. Check your tire pressure at least once a month.

Outdoor activities

Warm weather is great, but it also means there are more people outside. This means you will have to drive especially carefully. There may be pedestrians or bicyclists in your blind spot.  A child may even unexpectedly run into the street after a toy. It is important to drive with extreme caution. Constantly scan the road for any possible pedestrians or bicyclists.

When you drive next to a bicyclist, it is important to give them enough room to ride comfortably. Do not try to cut them off. When you turn at an intersection, you should be especially careful. There may be a bicyclist in your blind spot.

Hit and Run May Have Caused Pileup

On Wednesday morning at about 6:00 there was an 11 car pileup on the northbound 405 Freeway in Seal Beach.

The California Highway Patrol received a report about the multiple vehicle collision at around 6:10. The collision occurred on the northbound 405 freeway just south of the 605 Freeway. Traffic was extremely congested because of the accident. Typically, the 405 freeway is heavily congested during morning traffic.

There were some injuries, but the injuries did not appear to be too extensive or severe. Paramedics reported to the scene to help examine the injured. Thankfully, there were no fatalities. It is very fortunate no one was severely injured. Heavy traffic and car accidents can be a deadly combination.

After the crash, officers closed two lanes at 6:27 a.m. and re-opened them later at 7:34 a.m.  The cars were scattered over the carpool lanes and lanes one and two. Several California Highway Patrol officers reported to the scene. The Orange County Fire Authority also reported to the scene.

Investigators believe there may have been a 12 car that caused the pileup. The investigators are investigating the possibility of a hit and run. No description of the vehicle that allegedly caused the crash has been released.  The investigation into the crash is still ongoing. The investigation may take a longer time because it was a multiple car crash. Investigators will have to interview multiple witnesses and analyze multiple versions of witness accounts.

Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in this accident. Accidents on freeways are often fatal or at least cause serious injuries. While driving on the freeway, it is incredibly important drive carefully and cautiously. Focus on the road and avoid any distractions. Before changing lanes, it is important to carefully check blind spots. Larger vehicles tend to have bigger blind spots.

If you spot a reckless or possibly impaired driving, be especially careful. Avoid coming in contact with the driver. When it is safe, you should report the driver to the authorities. The authorities can safely handle the dangerous driver. It is also important to avoid drivers with road rage. These drivers drive incredibly recklessly and dangerously.

The Korean car manufacturer will notify owners of affected vehicles in the next two months. Hyundai and Kia will notify affected owners to visit their local dealership. Dealers will inspect cars and replace the switch at no cost for the owner. The new stop lamp switch will have the most recent technology improvements. Currently, it is not known if there have been crashes or injuries caused by this defect.

The Hyundai Elantra recall is for an air bag problem. Affected vehicles may have a support bracket that can come loose when the side air bags are inflated. This defects could cause injure car occupants. There has been a report of people being injured by this car defect. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was able to trace the problem specifically to cars with auto-dimming rear-view mirrors installed after arriving in the U.S. During installation of the mirrors, technicians may have dislodged the bracket.
