2 DUI Suspects Arrested

Over the weekend two suspects were arrested for suspicion of drunken driving.

Last Thursday morning, a 75-year old man was killed in a hit in run accident. Parts of the car were left at the scene of the accident. Police were able to identify the make and model of the car based on the accident.  The vehicle was a dark blue 1995 BMW 740 iL. A civilian called to report a vehicle matching the police description.

Police followed the damaged vehicle matching the description.  Investigators inspected the car and confirmed that the damage was consistent with the accident. The suspect was arrested in connection to the accident. He is being booked for suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, DUI, felony hit and run, and driving on a suspended license. The suspect has been convicted of a DUI previously.

On Friday morning, a 14 year old boy was struck by a car. The boy died the following Saturday morning. He was skateboarding on Rose Drive, north of Castner Drive. At 8:49 p.m., he was struck by the car. The driver of the car was later arrested on suspicion of DUI.

The suspect was taken into custody at the Placentia Police Station. Police are still investigating the accident. Traffic investigators have collected evidence using laser and GPS technology. The technology is being used to determine if speed contributed to the accident.

Police are looking for witnesses. There were witnesses at the scene, but at the time of the accident, officers were not able to interview because they were focused on the victim. The victim’s autopsy is scheduled for today. Police will continue investigating the incident.

These car accidents were horrific. This innocent pedestrian and skateboarder were murdered. Please remember to be safe. Cars cannot always see skateboarders and pedestrians especially at night. Protect yourself. At night and in the early morning, wear bright or light colored clothing. Carry a flashlight so drivers can see you. Walk in well-lit areas. Make eye contact with drivers so that they know you are there.

Bus driver arrested for DUI

A bus driver was arrested late December on suspicion of drunken driving while on the job.

The driver was on a San Clemente route when she was pulled over on suspicion of driving while under the influence.  There were no passengers injured. After the arrest, a replacement driver and supervisor were sent to ensure the bus continued its route. The arrest occurred at approximately 10 a.m. near North El Camino Real and Avenida Estacion. There is no information about why the driver was driving while under the influence.

The driver was a “coach operator” for MV Transportation. The Orange County Transportation Authority contracts MV Transportation for certain routes. All drivers are required to uphold the same guidelines. The OCTA has a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy.

Upon notification of the driver’s arrest, she was immediately fired from MV Transportation. After this arrest, the senior OCTA management spoke directly to all drivers about the important safety requirements. Management has continued to communicate directly with employees, following the arrest. The OCTA has also updated its drug and alcohol policy. It has increased the amount of random testing of employees by 10 percent annually. OCTA will also require MV transportation to provide a summary of each of its driver’s safety records and disciplinary status after any accident.  Hopefully, these changes will make public transportation safer.

Thankfully, no one was injured because of this driver’s irresponsibility. Every 51 minutes someone dies because of a drunk driver. Drunken driving is a serious problem that can be easily avoided. Please notify police if you are suspicious of a driver, and do not drink and drive. This bus driver had a responsibility to safely drive her passengers to their destinations.
