As a result of this flood, the community suffered. A neighboring community named Harper flourished while Fairview suffered. On May 11, 1920, the city’s name, Harper, was changed to Costa Mesa. The name was a reference to the city’s geography.

Costa Mesa experienced significant growth during and after World War II. Many soldiers were trained at the Santa Ana Army Air Base. These same soldiers returned to the area after the war. Costa Mesa was incorporated in 1953. Today, Costa Mesa is a thriving community. It is a city with some of the best restaurants, retail centers, and cultural arts in the nation.

The city of Costa Mesa is hope to one of the largest retail centers in the nation, South Coast Plaza. It is an upscale luxury shopping center. South Coast Plaza is famous for its architecture and large sale. It has one of the highest volumes in the nation. Many luxury and notable stores and brands can be found in South Coast Plaza.
